How to Buy a Firearm Online

Things to Know Before You Buy

• You are responsible for knowing your state and federal laws (special permits and restrictions needed to obtain a firearm or ammo).
• All firearms are required by law to ship to a Federal Firearms License (FFL). We will never have a firearm shipped to your home address.
• Once you order a firearm and the FFL you selected has received it, you must complete a 4473 (Firearm Transaction Record) and pass a background check.
• After you complete the 4473 and pass the background check, you are cleared to receive the firearm.

Things to Make Note of When Buying a Firearm Online

• FFL transferring dealers will charge a fee to complete the transfer — average is $20–$55.
• Some states will require you to pay sales tax if you didn't pay it online.
• If you live in California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or New York, it is especially important to verify what you are buying is legal to own in your state.
• A good policy when buying a firearm online is to inspect the firearm for damage, defects, and function at your FFL's location prior to completing the 4473.

How to Checkout with a Firearm

1. Add a firearm to your cart and proceed to checkout.
2. Enter your shipping address. Firearms never ship to your home — your address is used to find licensed dealers near you.
3. In the FFL Dealer step, search the map for a nearby dealer and select the one who will receive your firearm.
4. Can't find your dealer? They may need to be added to our database — email FFL@shootingsurplus.com and we'll get them set up.
5. Choose your payment method and place the order. We confirm your dealer's license, ship to them, and they'll contact you for pickup — bring ID and complete the Form 4473 background check there.

After Checkout

You may receive an email requesting a copy / photo image of your FFL's license. If we have their license on file, no action is needed. Otherwise, we cannot ship until we have the license.

We highly encourage you to be proactive — we process a high volume of orders daily. Upload the FFL image via our FFL upload page.

We ship Monday – Friday. Processing time once payment and FFL/FFL image have been received can take 24 – 96 hours. Once your order has shipped, you'll receive a tracking email.
